Synopsis
Dr. Sarah Jefferson broke some glass ceilings on her way to becoming the warden of Crawford Correctional’s maximum-security prison, but she didn’t get to the position easily—or by choice. Her winding journey to Crawford begins in her college years, when her brother commits suicide and she dedicates her life to helping the mentally ill. Soon after, she starts her career in a state hospital, which ultimately leads her to work in a prison known for the “Crawford Curse.”
At Crawford, Sarah reports to Warden Guiles, a hateful man who almost destroys her good name. Sarah’s relationship with Guiles was always rocky, and when he announces the premature death of Victor Valentine, an inmate who had only days to live before his scheduled execution, Sarah notices Guiles is shaking. Is he somehow connected to Valentine’s murder?
Surrounded by lies and corruption, Sarah wants her freedom and starts to plan her escape. But when the tides shift, she’s forced to become the next warden at Crawford. Who Is Laura E. Bedard?
Laura E. Bedard, Ph.D. began her career in corrections as a jail administrator in 1984. She served on the administrative faculty for the College of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Florida State University for 17 years. In 2005, she became the first female Deputy Secretary for the Florida Department of Corrections. She has managed state and federal facilities serving as Warden at six facilities in Florida, Texas and Ohio. Dr. Bedard has published and lectured worldwide on a number of corrections related topics including women in prison, mental health and correctional leadership. She currently serves on the American Jail Association Board of Directors, the Corrections Accreditation Commission, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Policy Board and the Board of the Florida Council on Crime and Delinquency. She has been married to her husband Roy for 29 years and they have two fabulous grown children. “What Do I Wear to the Execution?” Is her first fictional book.
